I am Marisa, a former fashion model, writer and qualified personal trainer and nutritionist. Those are my paper credentials to talk about the topics which this blog will cover but I will elaborate a bit more.

As a model I featured in International magazines including Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle and I.D and walked for fashion week in Milan and London. I had a book published in 2009 called Perfect Image based around my time modelling. Over the years I have learnt a lot about beauty and fashion and now have many friends still in the industry who update me regularly. I understand the fashion industry and I have a strong appreciation of high end luxury goods but not at the cost of humanity.

On the fitness front, I am a qualified Personal Trainer and I hold an Advanced Diploma in Nutrition and Weight Management. I have also done a short course with the Health Sciences Academy on Food Allergies and Intolerances. I am a vegan that wants to ensure I get all of the right nutrients alongside having a balanced relationship with food that is not overly fussy and remembers that central to all is enjoyment in eating.

On the animal welfare side of things, I run the Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare and have been involved in animal conservation and protection work as well as working with a range of charities internationally. I have travelled extensively and visited animal rescue centres around the world with time spent in Fiji, India, Egypt, Malaysia and Laos rescue centres. I have seen terrible cruelty firsthand including bear bile farms, dog meat trade and fur farms. I have spent time in horrendous places like slaughter houses because I believe to speak with authority on this topic means knowing and understanding what you are talking about.

However, my very best credential is that I love animals and I am fascinated by the environment. I have been a vegetarian since I was 10 years old and then moved into becoming a vegan later in life.

I have a degree in English, a Masters in Politics & International Relations and a Diploma in Public Affairs. I spent over 5 years working in Parliament writing reports, speeches, and articles. I felt that using legislation was the best way of making a difference and, whilst I am a little less sure of that now because it takes such a long time to create or change law, I am still pleased that I understand the processes of working with Government which has helped with national and overseas work on animal welfare and environmental projects.

Having a love of fashion alongside a love of animals has often meant a conflict when a lot of clothing is produced by dubious means and also physical training to quite a high level on a vegan diet required a good understanding of nutritional needs. Deadlifting 90kg at a weight of 52kg means I cannot be weak and lacking in protein intake. However, it is still a work in progress and I am learning more each day about foods, how items are produced and the wider affects of this. Conscientious Chic is a way of sharing all the knowledge I have collected on fitness, nutrition, fashion and beauty from all of the experts I have met and all of the books I have read and the studying I have done and ensuring all of it centres around conscientious choices that do not harm any other living being or affect you negatively.

I hope this blog will allow me to share that knowledge and also gain some knowledge from readers.
