If you take a stance on something important like animal welfare or environmentalism then it is quite important to be careful in ensuring you follow that way of living carefully and avoid being a hypocrite. How many times did I get people pointing at my leather shoes when I mentioned I was a vegetarian and truth be told I did feel hypocritical wearing animal products when I refused to eat them on the grounds of ethics.

So this post may seem a little odd in light of the above because it is about wearing animal by-products that are secondhand to avoid supporting designers by buying them new. I am talking about leather jackets, shoes, belts so for example there is a lot of good designer items bring sold on ebay such as Balencianga handbags and leather jackets.

I say this for people who still want to wear leather but also want to consider animal welfare. I personally still wear the leather goods I bought before I went vegan and animal product free. I have handbags nearly ten years old and chanel boots that I have had for ages. I used to buy high quality leather that would last for decades. I no longer buy leather and have found good alternatives such as StelleMcCartney bags, velvet or canvas shoes and some great quality faux leather leggings and jackets. my thoughts are that I am not going to waste the leather items I did buy, instead I will look after them so well that they last for a long time and I won’t need to fuel the industry by buying more.

Perhaps this is a confusing message to send out to people but the important thing is that I am clear in my decisions relating to my ethical choices. I am able to explain those choices to people with confidence. I would say the same to those people who want to wear skins and fur- I would prefer you not to do it but if you do buy it secondhand and ensure that animals’ life is not wasted by tossing the item away. ┬áThe older items are there, the animal has been killed and the money paid but now we have such good alternatives; fake snake, mock croc, faux fur, leatherlook. We can stop with the constant consumerism of leather, fur, skin, feathers now.
