The purpose of life to me is to fill it with as many experiences as possible and to do so with as little negative impact on any other living thing. Clearly, this will not always be possible as the two of those purposes do not really go together all that smoothly. Any action will have some sort of impact and one could get extreme by saying I cannot fly to a different country because my carbon footprint may damage some poor creatures habitat or pollute the air that we breathe. I simply mean that whilst going through life it is important to always consider others around you and to acknowledge and respect their existence – I mean animals, creatures, all living things! This is really difficult in a world that seems to be getting more selfish and less altruistic in many ways but then it is even more important that we do act with kindness and consideration in the hope that the starfish story will be true:

A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean.

“Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks.

“Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.”

“But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.”

The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”
